In the late fifties and early sixties, competition was fierce between the watch brands to create watches able to accompany humans in their exploration feats. Going under the sea with this watch or climb the everest with this other one, was instantly a commercial argument in order to create an iconic watch. Being one of the top watchmakers back then, Eterna jumped in the race with fierce ambitions, and released their « deep » diver the Super-Kontiki. Super because it was back then the most waterproof of the Kontiki line, named after Thor Heyerdahl (a famous Norwegian explorer and archeologist who launched himself on a raft to prove that the pacific islands had been populated by south-American people instead of the commonly ackowledged theory of a population coming from south-east Asia). Waterproof at 200meters this is the most coveted Eterna diver, using a big 40mm stainless steel case and an automatic ETA movement modified with Eterna’s own rotor technology. Coming with its original Gay Freres beads of rice bracelet, with an untouched and superb glossy dial and an unpolished case, this is perhaps the best example to reach the market in the last few years. An opportunity not to be missed if you’re into rare diving watches.
